Christmas Fabric in Stock

We all know it’s coming, in fact some very well prepared people have been planning for this year since last year, but we know that for other people, even acknowledging that it’s getting closer can send them into a blind panic – so out of respect for those people and the fact that we aren’t even past Halloween yet, we’ll whisper it: Christmas fabric is now in stock at the shop. Shhhhh….

(And for those that are too excited for words that we are only 11 weeks from the big day itself, we say: Yay! Christmas fabric is in stock! Woop woop!)

Take a look at all these truly delicious festive prints and imagine what delights you could create with them:

This year we have three different styles: a traditional Scandi style collection, featuring reindeer, trees, hearts, stars and snowflakes in soft red, cream and grey; perfect for children and those that love penguins and polar bears, these cutesy icey scenes of skiing and snow will capture plenty of hearts; and finally our brights collection is just that – full of funky designs for a more modern take on the festive period, printed in super cool bright pink, turquoise, green and orange.

Obvious suggestions spring to mind such as stockings, Santa sacks, table runners and place mats, but what about sewing up some truly festive pyjama bottoms in the presents print, or with Rudolph’s head and shiny nose all over them? Clair is planning to make herself a kimono dress out of the bright stars on navy, so why not think outside the box and create some more festive outfits for yourself or your family.

Last year we had several orders for the Amelie dress in the more traditional Scandi style prints and they looked insanely beautiful, just perfect for little girls who would love to open a swishy dress to wear on Christmas Day. But boys needn’t be left out – we think the snowflakes or hearts would make simply adorable waistcoats for the festive period. Or just imagine a one year old in a reversible dress covered in skiing penguins!

If inspiration is not striking just yet or if you just fancy an easy life (quite frankly, who doesn’t?), then look no further than the pre-printed designs. Whether you want to make big stockings for hanging over the fireplace, tiny stocking bunting or simply knock up an advent calendar that you can use year after year, these fabulous prints take some of the hard work out of the process. The brights quilt panel could be turned into just that, a snuggly Christmas quilt, or you could create table runners or mats out of the paneled sections too. And who knows, while you busy sewing up one of these numbers, you may suddenly be struck by the perfect set of festive makes to get going with next.

All our new season Christmas fabric is currently in stock and available to buy at £12.50 a metre. Pop into the shop for a closer look or phone us on 01233 612278 to ask us a question. And don’t forget, Christmas is only 79 days away …(Sorry!)

New Collections from Makower

A very exciting couple of parcels arrived at the shop this week, containing our very first proper delivery of new fabrics for 2016. Following on from our visit to a very chilly Henley back in November, we were thrilled to rip open the packing tape and get our hands on some of the brand new collections that we order a couple of months ago; some of them may seem a little summery for this wintry weather we’re having right now, but there’s nothing like looking forward to spring and warmer days to inspire you for your first makes of the year.

Including a gorgeous range of ever popular nautical designs, fresh spring colours, funky new polka dots and Scandi style florals, we’re sure there are plenty of prints here that will spark your sewing imaginations.

We simply cannot get enough of the beautiful seaside and nautical inspired collection: sea shells, star fish, beach huts, sail boats, signal flags and life belts, all come together in bright red, soft blues and greys, French navy and linen cream to create these luscious designs. Alongside the standard prints, there are also pre-printed bunting outlines and a panel of beach huts, which are just perfect for super easy and quick makes.

Clair has already created this lovely lap quilt, backed with the pretty star fish in navy and cream.

Already thinking about jetting off to foreign climes for a little hot weather break? Take a look at the vacation collection for some holiday inspiration – vintage style illustrations of mopeds, sunglasses, passports and stylish ladies are all printed in sunny greens, corals and blues, with hints of red and orange. The airmail stamps are the ideal extra to add to this quirky mix.

More spring colours and cute designs come courtesy of the rabbits and pandas in pink and green; pair them with their matching pixel square prints for a gorgeous, fresh take on baby quilts and clothing for little people.

These amazing Scandinavian style big print floral designs and their leaf counterparts are just crying out to be used in all sorts of creative ways. Little girls dresses, bags, culottes, funky quilts, cushions, bunting – the list just goes on and on. We can’t wait to see what you lot come up with for these prints.

The final new collection is a fabulous range of giant polka dots which will blend with all the other new collections is just the icing on the cake. Take a look at all these beautiful colours and we are sure you’ll instantly fall in love with at least three of them.

And if you’re on the look out for some more wintry style fabrics, fear not – our long awaited selection of brushed cottons are on the way soon! Perfect for using in our pyjama bottoms workshops on Saturday 30th January, these will be making a big impact on the shop, so keep your eyes peeled for news of more exciting deliveries!

New Arrivals

What with the market, new crafters taking up spaces and a whole host of classes and parties to organise, we’ve had so much going on in the shop recently that we haven’t managed to show off any of our new fabrics in a long time. So this week we thought we would take a bit of a breather, and in a final few days of calm before the storm of December hits, give you the chance to see what new bits and bobs have arrived in the shop recently. Think of it as the antidote to Black Friday – this is Quiet and Contemplative Browsing of lovely fabrics. Enjoy …

We picked up some extra last minute Christmassy patterns at the Makower open day in Henley the other day: bold and bright stars, and quirky hand drawn festive cars.

And some metallics which could also work in other seasons, but seem very appropriate for this time of year. we love a bit of bling every now and then, but especially the sophisticated kind.

We’ve also got our hands on some lovely new jersey from Germany again, including these super duper funky skulls, and space prints. The black stars are actually a sweat shirt material, which we’re becoming a little obsessed with – making your own comfy and cosy hoodies is very appealing when the wind is blowing a gale outside.

Fun and perfect for kids, these rainbow hedgehogs and cute foxes and will make excellent t shirts and leggings for little ones.

A few rather grown up prints snuck into out trolley at Makower, which we know is most unlike us, but occasionally we like to pretend we can behave like proper adults. Simple spots, tiny flowers, pale lines and stripes, hexagons and a little bit more Sherwood, because you can never have too much – ideal for quilters or some sophisticated dress making projects.

And back to the crazy stuff – some incredibly bright flamingos and these very adorable pink and coral cats.

Introducing our Loyalty Card

To coincide with the opening of the brand new shop a couple of weeks ago, we decide that it was about time we started rewarding all our lovely customers for sticking with us and choosing to buy our gorgeous fabrics and crafts, so this week we humbly present to you our very own loyalty card.

Healthier than handing out chocolates and much more satisfying than having us simply say nice things about your purchases, the loyalty card is the perfect reward for all your time and effort spent choosing and matching fabrics. Every time you spend £10.00 on materials or haberdashery with us, we’ll give you a stamp on the card, and then when your card is full, we’ll give you a five pound voucher to spend with us on your next shopping trip. Good eh?

We’ve handed out loads of cards to customers in the past couple of weeks, but we haven’t given out any vouchers yet, so you could be the first! We’ve had so many lovely compliments from everyone since we opened, we’re desperate to return the favour and show you how grateful we are for your loyal custom. So don’t be surprised if we give you a spontaneous round of applause when you hand over a completed card.

So what can we tempt you into the shop with to start earning stamps on your loyalty card? We’ve had quite a few lovely deliveries since we moved, including these simple but beautiful polka dots which now come in loads more colours than we’d had before. Amazingly versatile, these spotty prints work fabulously for quilting, patchwork, on clothing for children and grownups – retro circle skirts and dinky pjyamas are just the tip of the iceberg for these dots.

We’ve also got out hands on some gorgeous bird and leaf designs from Makower – available in pale grey, muted green and soft pink, these line drawing style prints. Cushions, curtains and baby bedding is what they make us think of.

More autumnal patterns are starting to creep in now (we know! it’s still the summer holidays!) and we can’t help cooing over this gorgeous woodland collection, featuring stag silhouettes, and line drawings of bagders, rabbits and foxes. Perfectly coordinated to make an autumn themed, nature inspired quilt or throw for the sofa, we also feel like those stags are just crying out to be turned into a pair of crisp cotton traditional pyjamas.

And if you’re still stuck for inspiration, check out our brand new classes list, which has loads of classes and workshops all the way up to December.

Sewing Summer Dresses

Next week June arrives and we should finally start to see the welcome return of the warmer weather for more than one day at a time. And this means just one thing: sewing up some summer dresses! Whether you are a hard and fast dress wearer for the whole year (in which case, we salute you) or you only crack out the skirts and dresses for the summer, there is always room for more dress wearing potential from June onward.

Halter necks, a line skirts, skater style, maxi length, full skirted fifties numbers or simple sixties shift dresses, there are so many different styles of dress you can create for the summer – and all of them are great for spending days out shopping in town, heading down to the beach, mucking about with the kids or simply hanging out in your garden and enjoying the sun. Plus, all the different designs mean that you can always find a summer dress pattern that will suit your height, shape, desire to never have your knees seen in public or one which will cover up those wobbly bits at the top of your arms; there is always a pattern that is right for you.

So to that effect, here are a little selection of our vintage summer dress patterns that you could use for inspiration. And don’t forget that if you simply don’t have the time, the very lovely Melissa of Aye Aye can make up sun dresses for both little girls and grownup ones in any of our fabrics – just come into the shop for a chat and a browse of our selection, and we’ll help you order one.

Cute and swingy seventies style dresses are perfect for the spring/summer crossover when you still might want some coverage on your arms. Pair with some strappy sandals or wedges for a seriously retro look.

A classic shift dress can be made from not very much fabric at all, meaning you can save yourself quite a bit, or have loads of different coloured and patterned versions! Good for work as well as play, a shift dress is also a very quick make.

Go a bit more dressy and create something suitable for day to evening with this round neck or v neck prom dress, in seventies influenced prints. The extra wide waistband can be a point of interest with a contrast fabric or even lace or a crochet panel.

Maxi dresses are still very much the thing for summer 2015, and this halter neck version is a really lovely way of making it a bit different. Using some of our gorgeous new Gutermann prints, you won’t need quite so many metres of fabric as the bolts are super wide.

Go for simple polka dots or a dice print on this equally simple a line sleeveless dress. Cool for summer and great for the beach or to pack to take on holiday.

If you’re feeling inspired to make some seriously summery dresses, pop in and see what fabrics take your fancy and then take your pic and tag us on Facebook so we can see what you’ve made – we love being nosy!

New Arrivals from Makower

A lovely bundle of gorgeousness arrived from Makower first thing this morning, giving us that delicious Christmassy feeling of opening up a parcel that you know will contain objects of delight. Full of warm colours and appealing patterns, these little numbers are certain to get as many oohs and aahs as the turning on of the Christmas lights when you see them in person. But just in case you can’t get into the shop any time soon to see all the new designs, here’s a sneak peak at our newly arrived fabrics.

These beautiful tumbling circles with their multi coloured patterns and hints of gold are sheer bliss when it comes to choosing winter or festive fabrics in a non-traditional way. Full of rich and warm colours, they would make delightful table decorations, such as napkins or table runners.

Made from the same colour palette, these spiralling trees are just as perfect for the festive season. Featuring a stronger gold element in the tree trunks and inside the smaller circles, they contrast beautifully with the deep blue and the cool cream of the background.

Two more abstract patterns from Makower are also now on sale in the shop: the first is full of simple shapes and designs, combined with a limited colour palette of blue, cream, red and gold. Kind of jewel-like and very reminiscent of Klimt’s paintings, this is a fantastic design for anything that shows off its eccentric patterns. The second grey, red and white combination comes from a series inspired by Aboriginal art, featuring finger dots and swirling pathways representing travel. Great for decorating a home, these repeating circles are spot on for accessories for the man in your life.

The final design brings you yet more festive gold with these wonderful spiral designs set against a deep blue and that cool cream again. Bringing to mind hand drawn calligraphic script, these fabrics would make for a sumptuous winter quilt.

And if you were in any doubt as to how well these patterns and colours gel together, take a look at this pile of delicious fat quarters on the cutting table – doesn’t it make you just want to take them all home and immediately start creating a fantastic new project? Personally speaking, we’ve already got  at least five different projects ready to go!

All the new fabrics from Makower are on sale at Emporia Fabric & Craft for £11.00 per metre.
