Win a Cupar Hat Knitting Kit!

_20171219_143303 (2)

This week we are approaching the end of January, arguably one of the most gloomy and depressing months of the year – Christmas is long gone and spring is still far too far off to look forward to; the evenings are still dark and the weather is still cold! So what can we get excited about? Craft! That’s what! We suggest you take advantage of the Hygge factor of the long nights and make sure your craft stash is well and truly full, before settling down in the evening to make something for yourself, a friend or loved one, or even for charity. Psychologists have been talking for years now about the mental health benefits of all kinds of craft – knitting and crochet can apparently help stave off dementia, and sewing is good for mental agility and mindfulness – so if you’re feeling a touch of the winter blues right now, the answer could well lie in your sewing box or knitting bag.

And to that end we are sharing the Win a Cupar Hat Knitting Kit competition hosted by Lotte Jamieson Crafts this week. For anyone who has already knitted her super easy Irvine cowl or perhaps wants a simple and quick project to keep their hands busy, this pattern is the ideal next step. Using extra chunky 15mm needles and just one hank of Lotte Jamieson merino yarn, this hat can be made with an extra fold over edge that will keep the wind out and ensure warm ears whatever the weather; add a large pompom for fun or go without, it’s up to you!

The kit contains a pair of 15mm needles, one hank of 100% merino in a colour of your choice, the Cupar hat pattern and a knitting bag to keep it all together. It’s a lovely little treat to mark the end of January, so we’re sure you’d love to take part.

The competition runs until the end of January, when Lotte herself will be rejoicing at the end of that most wintry month, and the winner will be announced on Thursday 1st February. All you need to take part is like the Lotte Jamieson Crafts page and competition post on Facebook or Instagram, and then comment on the post to say who you would like to knit the hat for, or whether you’d hand it over to someone else to get the knitty benefit. Just follow either of the links below to enter, and don’t forget to comment!

Gifts for Christmas 2017 at Emporia

Today is the 1st December so that’s it, we are now officially on the countdown to Christmas! Whether you are all prepped with a shopping list (or in fact have been calmly and casually shopping since August) or you are the kind of person who leaves everything to the last minute, we are here to help you with a quick and convenient guide to Christmas gifts for craft fans.

The newest gifty introduction to Emporia’s shelves has to be our amazing and super funky sewing and knitting themed jewellery. Created in collaboration with the talented R&R laser cutters, these amazing designs feature a range of crafty themes from scissor earrings and ball of wool brooches to statement tape measure necklaces. If you know someone who is proud of their crafty status, there’s no better way to reward them (and give them a chance to show off) this Christmas. The jewellery ranges from £12.00 – £20.00 per piece.

Also new in stock are these cute little craft kits, just perfect for little fingers to get to grips with. Choose from felt sewing a bear or an owl, or the chance to sew up a cotton bunny or monkey – we’re sure these will be a big hit under the Christmas tree with all ages of kids, and grownups too!

Know someone who is feeling the chill this December? Treat them to the gift of warmth with our range of soft wool cowls and bobble hats designed by Lotte Jamieson. Or if they like making things themselves, choose from our select range of Rowan knitting books and wool; how about a beginner’s knitting kit including a pattern for a simple cowl, enough merino wool to make it, needles and a knitting bag all for £25.00. We’ve also got a good selection of high quality knitting needles and crochet hooks, which make fabulous stocking fillers for crafty sorts, with prices ranging from £2.50 – £12.00. Rowan pattern books cost £9.99, and Rowan wool ranges from £6.50 – £9.95 per ball.

We’ve got a range of fat quarters, Kaffe Fasset quilting squares and a couple of design rolls in gorgeous colours and patterns available at the shop, all of which make great stocking fillers. Choose a pre-made fat quarter bundle for around £12.00-£14.00, or make your own selection based on the recipient’s likes. Individual fat quarters range from £2.00-£4.25; the Kaffe Fasset squares are £15.00, and design rolls are priced at £25.00.

We all know at least one crafter who is always losing their scissor, cotton reels, unpicker and pins – give them the organisational skills they need with one of our beautiful sewing boxes and a wrist-worn pin cushion to accompany it. Available in a variety of lovely colours and themes, these fantastic boxes are the perfect place to store all your crafty goodies, keeping everything in one neat place ready to use whenever you have sewing time. The wrist pin cushions are £4.50 each, and the sewing boxes range from £20.00-£30.00.

For those wanting to give someone a truly amazing treat under the Christmas tree this year, why not take a look at some of our brilliant Brother sewing machines? Whatever your budget, we’ve got basic mechanical models that would work as perfect starter machines for someone just getting into sewing, all the way up to all singing, all dancing sewing and embroidery machines. The L14s is a great machine for beginners, with a variety of simple stitches, and it’s only £99.00. Or perhaps you know someone who would love to start sewing more stretch materials and would love an overlocker? Our trusty 1034D is a great machine to get cracking with jersey and sweatshirting, or to tackle tricky fraying fabrics like satin, and it’s only £199.00. For someone who wants to try their hand at machine embroidery with a love for Disney, the Innovis M280D is ideal – featuring 25 different official Disney machines, this sewing and embroidery combination machine is smaller and much lighter than some of it’s bigger contemporaries and won’t take up as much space on your sewing table, for only £899.00.

As well as all these luscious gifts, we are also selling ALL of our Christmas fabric at 40% off between now and 24th December 2017 – so you’ve still got time to get making for the big day itself!

Have yourself a Hygge Christmas

xmaswindow1

Halloween has been and gone, Guy Fawkes Night takes place this weekend and half term is nothing but a distant memory, all of which can only mean one thing – Christmas is well and truly on its way. And so this week we cleared away the autumnal colours and put our  Christmas windows in place.

xmaswindow2

Full of bright colours and soft textures, our main window this year takes inspiration from the Danish word Hygge, a buzzword which seems to have swept across Britain in the style of the Vikings, dragging us all into it’s cosy wake. If you’ve been living under a rock for the past six or seven months, or just perhaps buried under a pile of fabric, desperately sewing, you may not have encountered the word, so for those not in the know, Hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) is the Danish embodiment of cosy, wintery, easy sociability – making the routine and day to day more special, taking delight in the small things, spending time with your family and friends without feeling like you have to cater for an entire army unit, or putting your pyjamas on after collecting the kids from school. Basically, it comes down to being kind to yourself, and others, and indulging in your own well being.

cardigans

So this winter you can see our Christmas winter is full of cosy designs, warm colours and patterns, comfortable clothing and bright prints to ward off the dark and cold of the early evenings. Even our Christmas wreath is made from soft and fluffy pompoms. Pyjamas are the obvious Go To for us when we think of comfort, so you can see three pairs of cosy pj bottoms in the window – featuring Christmassy fabric and super soft brushed cotton.

jumper

But day time clothes can also be comfy if you coordinate with warm wool – the brand new kimono dress is very easy to wear and fits beautifully over leggings and long sleeved funky thermals, match it with a chunky wool cowl and you’re good to snuggle on the sofa or serve up a Christmas meal to friends. Chunky cardigans and slouchy jumpers are your best friends during winter, just make them bright and soft, and pop them on over relaxed trousers or simple skirts to keep your comfort levels high.

kimonoxmas

If you’re thinking of what to buy your loved ones this Christmas, you can’t go far wrong with the Hygge concept for gifts either – cosy quilts, squishy soft cushions, warm woolly cowls and hats, bright acrylic necklaces, pretty patterned prints and soft jersey bracelets. And if you spy some things in the shop that you fancy for yourself, you can always make use of our Christmas Wishlists – simply pop your name and email address on a form, and fill in the boxes with a description of the items you like. Then you can send in your boyfriend/mum/child to the shop and we’ll help them make sure you get just what you want under the Christmas tree.

All fabrics used in the Christmas window are available at Emporia priced £12.50 – £16.00 per metre; the wool used on the models is available from £6.95 – £12.00 for 200g. The prices of the gifts varies.

Rowan and Patons Wool Now in Stock

woolwall

We started selling small amounts of wool and cotton back in the old small shop in spring, and now we’ve moved to our lovely new big shop, we’ve got plenty more space to stock it. So if you’re starting to feel the need to boost your yarn stash for the coming months, come and have a butchers at our new collections and you could start planning your autumnal knitting right away.

thicknthin

It’s been a long time coming and a terrible obsession for one of us (yes, I confess, it’s me not Clair), but we finally have some Rowan yarn in the store! The truly scrumptious Thick N Thin is a gorgeous, uneven twisted wool that comes in a range of nature inspired colours. With names like Moorland and Limestone, you feel like you could be knitting something made of the landscape itself.  We’ve currently got four beautiful earthy colours in stock and will be increasing the range come autumn.

handknitcotton

A stable for many all year round knitters, Hand Knit Cotton also from Rowan has been gracing our counter for a couple of weeks now, attracting lots of compliments for its ice cream pastel palette. Suitable for double knit patterns and crochet, these super cute yarns are the perfect introduction to anyone knitting with cotton for the very first time.

fabbig

Fab Big and Fab Big Colour are also now on our shelves and these super duper chunky yarns will be forming the basis of our beginner’s knitting sessions (see the Classes page above for more information) which kick off in September. Extra chunky wool knits up faster than smaller yarns, so if you’re new to knitting and want to get off to a flying start, this is the stuff for you! Available in a range of bright or subtle colours, there will be more variety coming along in the autumn.

needles

It’s been very popular with everyone since we introduced it back in March, but we’ve just added a few new colours to the chunky cotton Natura XL range, with the dusky pink, soft grey and French navy proving to be just the sort of shades that make knitters go Oooh! Great for chunkier crochet, this yarn is fantastic for baby blankets as the soft cotton is naturally breathable, but also that little bit warmer than the thinner stuff.

With needles and crochet hooks now added to the collection, and more varied colours due for arrival next month, we’re seriously in the mood for getting our knit on. If you’d like to join us for our Friday Knit and Natter sessions from 1pm, we’d love to see what you’re working on. Or if there’s some kind of knitty stock you’d like to see on our shelves, pop in and let us know – we’d love to hear your opinion.

STOP PRESS! Local wools will be joining the Emporia collection soon! Keep your eyes peeled for more news on our Facebook page or via Instagram.

Wool Comes to Emporia

woolbasket

You’ve been asking for it for ages, and now we’ve finally succumbed – at long last, we are now stocking wool! Gorgeous colours, soft merino strands in invitingly squishy balls of loveliness. Check these babies out, currently appearing in our spring themed window:

mixed

Aren’t they lush? And that’s not all the range, over the coming months we will be stocking up with more colours and giving you the chance to tell us what you like best. I personally love the turquoise contrasted with the pale pink, or the deep teal with the reddish pink – simply delicious colours. These yarns are all 100% pure merino wool and knit up as double knitting on 3.5mm or 4mm needles, making them fantastic for a huge variety of projects, from clothing and accessories to socks and fine knit hats and gloves. Once I’ve finished spending all my time on Pinterest wading through inspirational patterns, I’ll get cracking on my first new wool makes!

redpinkwool

And that’s not all – coming very soon to the shop will be more fantastic yarn in the form of super duper chunky cotton, just perfect for the summer. These extra chunky cottons come in a range of colours just as beautiful as the merino, but since they’re a lot bigger, they knit up really quickly making them ideal for beginners. For anyone that thinks of knitting as a winter pasttime, these cotton lovelies will make you change your mind, so keep your eyes peeled on Facebook for when they hit the Emporia shelves.

bluegrey

If you’re inspired by these beautiful colours and fine wool to get knitting yourself, but you’ve never done it before, now is the time to sign yourself up for a beginner’s knitting lesson and make yourself a special skinny spring scarf. There’s one more session on Monday 23rd March, and two more on Monday 20th and Monday 27th April 2015. The classes start at 6pm and last two hours, giving you the chance to learn all the basics including casting on, knitting, purling and casting off. The class costs £25.00 per person and includes 100 grammes of merino wool or 200 grammes of cotton yarn. Give us a ring or fill in the contact form for more information.

yellowbrown

So this is just the beginning of our little woollen adventure – let us know what you think of the yarns, and what else you’d like to see in the shop and maybe by this autumn, we’ll have even more for you to choose from.
