Me Made May Competition Time

May is coming very soon and you’ve only got a few more days to sign up to the Me Made May and pledge to wear your self-made garments throughout the month – Clair and I are raring to go, so we’d love you to join us and thousands of other sewers, knitters and refashioners around the world by signing up too! If you still don’t know what MMM is yet (where have you been?!) then check out our previous posts on the blog, or pop directly over to So Zo’s site and take a little look at precisely what’s involved – we promise you’ll be glad you did.

Monday 1st May 2017 is a very special day – not only is it a bank holiday (hurrah!) but it’s also the first day of Me Made May and therefore also the very first day you can take part in our MMM competition! Now if that doesn’t get you more excited than the prospect of eating badly cooked sausages from a neighbour’s barbecue while standing in the cold/damp/wind of normal May bank holiday weather, then I don’t know what will. Every year we run a competition throughout May to celebrate our participation in Me Made May and how much we enjoy wearing clothes that we have made, or refashioned, ourselves. And we also really enjoy seeing what you lot out there have made too, so much so in fact that we think you deserve a little reward.

This year we are making our MMM competition even bigger and better than before with three different prizes to be won! We want to really spread the word this year that making and wearing your own garments is something to be very proud of – dressmaking (and knitting, crocheting etc) is no longer a lost skill, it is something that has made a huge resurgence in the past five or six years, and is still growing. It doesn’t have to be about making huge and elaborate ball gowns or filling up your entire wardrobe with everything from pants and socks to jeans and coats, it can simply be a time when you get to sit down, by yourself or with a friend or your mum, and be creative. And that creativity results in you making some comfy pjs or a pretty summer dress, or any item of clothing that you will wear and cherish because you made it yourself. THAT is what we want to make a hoohah about – the joy of sewing and wearing your Me Made makes.

So what do we want from you? We simply want to see what you’ve been up to with out fabrics. At Emporia we are desperately nosy and we really love to know what you plan to make with that spotty turquoise print, or the cotton lawn with the orange flowers. Maybe you bought some of that delicious multi coloured stripe jersey from us ages ago and still haven’t got around to making anything with it yet, or perhaps you’ve been hoarding lots of different prints in your stash and have forgotten they’re there – now is the time to get sewing!

You can enter the MMM competition in three different ways: put your garment made with Emporia fabric on Facebook or Instagram and tag us so we can see what you’ve made; or you can email us a photo of your garment – you don’t have to be wearing it, but it does help us see the dress or trousers or whatever you’ve made at it’s best angle; or you can pop into the shop wearing your garment so we can take a photo ourselves as well as see it in person – again, if you don’t want to wear it, just pop it in a bag and bring it in that way, you still get a chance to win!

Three different winners will be chosen from the Emporia MMM Competition – one by us, one by you, our lovely sewing audience, and a third by the creator of Me Made May herself, Zoe! Prizes include patterns, fabric and lessons so there is plenty to get your hands on as a reward for your heard work. We can’t wait to see what you’ve all been up to!

The Emporia Me Made May Competition takes place from 10am Monday 1st May – 5pm Wednesday 31st May 2017. All entrants must have bought their fabric from Emporia Fabric & Craft (excluding vintage fabric) from July 2015 onwards; in order to enter the competition, entrants must provide evidence of their handmade garment in either photographic form or in person. For more information on the concept of MMM or the competition, please give us a ring on 01233 612278, contact us via the Contact form, or come and see us in the shop.

Enter our Anniversary Prize Draw and Me Made May Winner!

This week it’s a double whammy on the competition front – not only are we announcing the winner of our Me Made May 16 competition, but we’re also inviting you to enter our fabulous prize draw! Competition craziness!

So first up, who won the MMM title this year?

Big congratulations to Annette Battersby who made these adorable dungarees in some of our disty floral fabric for her granddaughter Amber. Annette wins her choice of a pattern and enough fabric from the shop to make it up. And thanks to everyone who took part – all the entries were fabulous, and we really enjoyed seeing our fabrics transformed into some wonderful garments. We hope to see you all again next year for some more of the same.

And now onto the next competition! Except it’s not a competition as such – it’s prize draw which celebrates our first anniversary of being in Park Mall. Yes, on the 17th July we will have been in our fabulous (newish) unit for one whole year, and so to mark the occasion we’ve put together a fantastically crafty and exciting bundle of goodies to give away, all of which comes to around £140.00 worth of products and materials from the shop. Take a closer look at what you could be getting your crafty mitts on:

Included in the prize basket is: six Rowan Hand Knit Cotton balls in gorgeous soft blues and greens, two Knit Pro Waves crochet hooks in 4mm and 4.5mm, two sets of Brittany birch knitting needles in 4mm and 4.5mm, a copy of Knitting and Crochet magazine, a copy of the Sewing Made Simple bookzine, a large pompom maker, a glue pen, a rotary cutter, a selection of Pebble hand sewing needles, three cotton reels, and a fat quarter bundle of new Gutermann pinks, greys and blues. Not a bad selection even if we do say so ourselves! Whether you are a sewer, knitter, crochet fan or just an all round crafter, just think what you could get up to with all this lovely lot. And if you’re new to any or all of it, this could be your chance to learn a new skill or even donate some of the prize to a friend who you know will use it. Either way, we know we would love to win something like this, so we hope you all would too.

So next time you pop into the shop for fabric, wool, haberdashery or crafts, if you’re spending over £20, just write your name, email and phone number down on an entry form and you could be in with a chance of winning the whole kaboodle.

Entry into the prize draw closes at 5pm on Saturday 16th July 2016 – keep your eyes peeled for more information on events taking place for our one year Park Mall anniversary coming soon!

Me Made May Competition Winner!

Me Made May is over for another year, and this week we get to announce the winner of our little competition to see what you’ve all been making and wearing over the course of the month. We had loads of fantastic entries showing off your incredible sewing skills and your brilliant taste in hand made patterns. Thanks so much for all your effort, but there can only be one winner, and that is …

Zoe with her gorgeous shift dress made from our very own Gutermann fabric! We think she looks fantastic and given how new she is to sewing, we’re incredibly impressed by her sewing skills. Just look at the centre line – perfect pattern matching! May and Patrick would be proud. So Zoe wins a £25.00 voucher to spend on more fabrics from the shop and a big round of applause from Emporia – keep up the good work, Zoe!

Clair and I have not been slacking when it comes to sewing for ourselves and our family either this month, so here’s a little selection of what we got up to during MMM.

I’ve been wearing a variety of old and new makes this May, with the most popular item being my brand new anchor print A line skirt; designed by Clair and made by me one afternoon in the shop, I love this skirt more than words can describe and it definitely wins my personal favourite for MMM this year. Other garments I created for Me Made May 2015 include: camisole and matching pyjama bottoms in zebra print cotton lawn (camisole pattern from the Sewing Bee book 1 and pj bottoms by Clair); a quick jersey star print cowl; a denim coloured wrap skirt (taken from an existing vintage skirt); a hand knitted nautical knot necklace (designed by me); and a kimono sleeve top (Salme patterns). Two classic Me Made items that get dragged out every summer but I only had the chance to wear a couple of times this May as the weather was so cold are my much loved culottes and the long A line skirt made from an Indian bedspread.

Clair hasn’t just been sewing for herself this May as you can see from her little selection. During May she wore: her red and green print belt (self designed); a kimono dress covered with little Japanese girls (self drafted); a grey t shirt embellished with applique flowers; a leopard print stretch bubble hem skirt, which has been a staple part of her wardrobe for years (self drafted); a stylised felt flower brooch made during the Emporia first birthday party create session; and a black and white star print wrap skirt (Tilly & The Buttons pattern). She also made a jumper and a hoody lined with red jersey from our fabulous Marc Jacobs sweater material for two of her boys this May.

Overall, we’re really pleased with how much we wore our MMM clothes and how it has inspired us to do more sewing. And we’re also really pleased with how many of you we have inspired this month too – so a special mention goes to this little girl and her fabulous VE inspired aeroplane dress.

Well done everyone! Let’s hope even more of you are creating fabulous garments by this time next year. Roll on MMM 2016!
